The International Cricket Council has announced the annual awards and also the test and ODI teams of the year 2016. Cricket fans are losing their minds as Kohli who has performed extremely exceptional in the year 2016 couldn’t find any place in the ICC test team of the year. Despite several failures, ICC picked the English skipper to captain the side. Most of the cricket fans feel the inclusion of Kohli instead of Alastair Cook would have been a better pick.

The ICC test team contains four Englishmen, four Aussies, and one each from Sri Lanka, India, New Zealand and South Africa. No Indian could find a spot except for the sensational spinner, Ravi Ashwin. Ashwin also bagged two awards which are the ICC Test Cricketer of the year and ICC Cricketer of the year. Virat Kohli’s performance in the limited overs format bagged him a spot in the ICC ODI team of the year. He is picked as the Captain.

The reason for Kohli not featuring in the ICC test team of the year is indeed a hot topic. Well lets start with Virat Kohli’s performance in 2016. Virat Kohli is probably going through a dream run in 2016. He scored almost 20 percent of his international runs in this year. Scoring three double centuries this year, Kohli has lead the team from front.

But most of Kohli’s runs in test cricket came in the later part of the year. Adding to that India did not play much of test cricket in the first half of the year. One major reason which lead to the omission of Kohli is that, the ICC selects the team considering the performance of the players during the period between September 2015 and September 2016. During this phase, Joe Root and Steven Smith have shadowed Kohli’s performance.

India has played only three test series in 2016, against the West Indies, New Zealand and England. In the 11 matches India played this year, Kohli scored three double hundreds and four centuries. The Hundreds he scored were huge, as his least score after crossing the hundred mark is 167. It has really been a wonderful year for the Indian skipper with no loss and 8 victories out of the 11 tests.

Even though Kohli has performed well, these factors might justify his omission from the ICC Test team of the year 2016. ICC picked Joe Root and Steve Smith over Kohli but cricket fans are disappointed with the inclusion of Cook as the skipper of the ICC Test XI.
