Sri Lankan veteran Mahela Jayawardene appointed as the head coach of Mumbai Indians for the 10th edition of IPL. By doing so Mumbai Indians have furthered strengthened their think tank that already has the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Jonty Rhodes, Shane Bond.
He takes the place of Ricky Ponting who has been associated with MI since 2013. In a video Mahela Jayawardene said, “I’m honoured to be chosen as a head coach of a very exciting team, whose a winning mentality embedded in their DNA”
He has played for 3 IPL franchises before. Starting his IPL career with KXIP, he led Kochi Tuskers Kerala in their only season in IPL. In 2012 he played for Delhi Daredevils under the captaincy of Sehwag before taking the reins of the franchise in 2013. In 80 IPL matches he has scored 1802 runs at 28.6 with a strike rate of 123. He is the second Sri Lankan batsman after Sanath Jaysuriya to score hundred in IPL.
Mumbai Indians, one of the most successful and popular franchise in IPL had a torrid time last season. MI Paltan are not used to seeing their team eliminated before playoffs. This time they’ll be looking to put their best foot forward and turn things around.
The auction is scheduled in the month of February. They will be looking to release some of the players who don’t fit in the team and bring in new fresh faces. Already they have a very strong team on paper, it all the matter of players playing upto their potential.
