Pakistan cricket team has already announced the one day international team last week for the Australia series but there is a surprise announcement has been made hours ago. Pakistani batting all rounder Mohammad Hafeez has got a late call up from his side.
Pakistan team management and their one day internationals captain Azhar Ali both requested the Pakistani cricket board to add him in the squad as an extra 16th member because a 15 member squad was already announced.
Hafeez is surely not selected as a batsman for this series because he is not quite there on the batting merit. His form with the bat was very average in recently concluded Pakistani domestic limited overs tournament. He had an average of 31 with the bat but the interesting fact was that he picked up 11 wickets in the bowling department.
His all round show stole the eyes of the Inzamam ul Haq led selection committee and they decided to recall him as a genuine all rounder who can bat up the order and bowl a full quota of 10 overs if needed and if the situations are favouring his bowling.
“The selection committee headed by Inzamam-ul-Haq today received a request from Pakistan team management comprising coach Mickey Arthur and captain Azhar Ali for sending Mohammad Hafeez to Australia for the ODI series. The selection committee has decided to accept the request of the team management and chairman of the PCB has approved the same. Hafeez will join the team shortly as the 16th member in Australia,” Pakistan Cricket Board released.
Hafeez is going to represent his country after a year’s span. He was out of the team because of back to back striking injuries. When he was fit, he lost his form and that is why it took more time for him to make a comeback in the national side.
So, as things stands now, it looks like Pakistan is in need of an all rounder rather than a solid top order batsman and that is why they chose Hafeez over the batsmen like Ahmed Shehzad and Kamran Akmal who are going through a purple patch in batting department.
