What a way to round off 2016. Quite certainly, this is one victory which will go down as one of the finest performances by the Australians. Absolutely out of the blue, a superlative knock from Mitchell Starc and a match changing spell from Nathan Lyon helped Australia thump Pakistan by an innings and 18 runs despite of scoring 443 runs in their first innings.

Smith was batting on 100 at the start of the day alongside Mitchell Starc and they both went after the Pakistani bowlers right from the outset. Starc finished with a scintillating 84 off 91 balls, which included 7 mighty sixes. Smith too ripped their line up apart and finished with 165, to round off what has been a spectacular 2016 for him personally.

Australia declared on 624/8 and piled up a 181 run first innings lead. Pakistan were off to a catastrophic start, losing Sami Aslam and Babar Azam in just over 4 overs. Yet, inform Azhar Ali and Younis Khan tried to steady the sinking ship and it seemed as though they might as well play out the day.

Yet, Nathan Lyon came to the rescue for Australia as he picked up 3 wickets in quick succession. From then on, Australia were in the driver’s seat and Pakistan were off to a defensive mode. Mitchell Starc finished the match as he picked the final three wickets in a spell of 3 overs and handed Australia a memorable boxing day win.
