From making 311/4 in the previous day, England waved towards the shore like a ‘hot knife through butter’ in making 537 runs all out, registering their highest ever total versus India in the last three decades. England’s batting slayed the Indian bowlers highlighting Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes, who brought up fourth Test century each.

Right from Day 1 to the end of Day 2’s Tea Break, it was all England’s widespread catastrophe over India. Though all the Indian bowlers managed to claim the England’s batting line-up, they would still regret the fact of leaking too many runs on the board. Ravindra Jadeja was the highest wicket-taker, bagging three wickets whereas Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami and Ravichandran Ashwin pocketed two apiece and Amit Mishra with a solitary piece.

In reply to England’s colossal 537 runs in the first innings, Indians’ attitude in the build-up to laying a good platform initiated well by Murali Vijay partnered alongside Gautam Gambhir with a new stance as India’s scores read 63/0.
