Lucknow Super Giants’ left-arm seamer Jaydev Unadkat suffered a shoulder injury during net practice on April 30, just ahead of LSG’s match against Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2023. According to reports, the 31-year-old fell awkwardly on his bowling arm after his feet got stuck in the rope that holds the net upright during his follow-through.
While there was no dislocation, Unadkat’s shoulder remained sore.Unadkat played three matches in IPL 2023 for LSG but remained wicketless after bowling eight overs. His injury could prove to be a big blow for India as he is included in the squad for the World Test Championship final scheduled to be played on June 7 at The Oval in London.
The injury to Unadkat has raised concerns for India’s bowling unit as he has been a consistent performer in domestic cricket. He was instrumental in Saurashtra’s RanjiTrophy victory in the 2019-20 season and was the leading wicket-taker with 67wickets in 10 matches. His performances earned him a spot in the Indian team forthe home series against South Africa in 2019.
Unadkat’s left-arm angle and ability to swing the ball could have been useful for India in the English conditions, especially as they prepare to face a strong New Zealand side in the final. However, with his injury, India will have to look for alternatives.
The Indian team management has a few options to choose from, including NavdeepSaini, who has played six Tests and has been impressive with his pace andaccuracy. Mohammed Siraj, who has played five Tests, could also be considered ashe has been in good form and has experience of bowling in English conditionsduring his county stint with Yorkshire.
Other options include Shardul Thakur andUmesh Yadav. The Indian team management will have to make a crucial decision on Unadkat’s replacement, considering the importance of the Test match and the conditions they will be facing.
The Indian bowlers will need to be at their best to counter the strong New Zealand batting lineup, and the team management will have to choose wisely to ensure that they have the best possible combination.
See you back on the field soon @JDUnadkat
