Gautam Gambhir suggests Ravi Ashwin to bat at number 4

Yet again the problem in number 4 slot exposed as KL Rahul failed to make the most of his opportunity in the recent ODI against England. Though it is very early to judge him, stats itself proves KL Rahul is a perfect top-order batsman with all the class written on his masterstrokes. But, his failure in middle-order once again opened gates for the game called ”musical chairs for number 4 slot”.

Meanwhile, the veteran stylish southpaw, Gautam Gambhir came up with a whole new option which would have never struck the minds of selectors or Team management. Gambhir called Ravi Ashwin to bat at number 4 for India in ODI’s which would not only bring the stability to the team but also an extra-option of spinner alongside the Wristy duo, Chahal and Kuldeep.

Gambhir feels that Ashwin cannot give a century with a great strike rate but his strike rotation and the ability to knock 40 runs brings stability in the middle order and as the bonus, India can happily use his 10-over quota alongside Chahal and Kuldeep. He then asked Hardik Pandya to bat at number 6 to bring more firepower while Rahul at number 5 if backed.

“I’ll probably back Ashwin to play and Hardik to bat at six if given that responsibility. Ashwin can bat at seven or four as well. KL Rahul can bat at five and Dhoni at six and maybe Hardik at seven as well. You’ve got three quality spinners for that matter. You’ve got Ashwin, Kuldeep, and Chahal as well. Maybe Ashwin or Jadeja can be given the responsibility to bat at four,” Gambhir said while talking on Cricbuzz Live.

“Someone batting at four will be an accumulator as well. He’s not someone who’ll give you a 60-ball or a 70-ball hundred. Even if he chips in with 30 to 40 runs at run-a-ball then you’ve got the firepower with Hardik, Rahul, and MS Dhoni to come as the finisher as well. It gives you a sixth bowling option and you’ve got a proper quality attack,” the Delhi-born cricketer added.

However, it would be interesting to see whether the officials or Virat Kohli will consider the suggestion made by Gautam Gambhir which has got all the logical points connected to it strongly.
