It was noted that the Indian team took some brave selection decisions that didn’t quite come off right. Rohit Sharma was picked ahead of deputy Ajinkya Rahane and the move didn’t pay dividends. It is now reported that Rohit may get another throw of the dice but southpaw opener Shikhar Dhawan can be replaced by KL Rahul.
Murali Vijay will hold on to his opening position as he has more experience in the South African conditions under his belt. Virat Kohli had said that they had gone with Dhawan and Vijay pair in the opening match because of the right and left-hand combination which makes it difficult for a bowler to settle into his rhythm.
Rohit Sharma might get another throw of the dice.
Rahul was also unlucky to miss out on the first Test as he was consistently scoring runs for India. He had also scored nine half-centuries in his last eleven innings. Dhawan was earlier reported to ruled out of the first Test but recovered in time to make himself available for selection.
The report said as quoted by TOI, “Rahul could make his way back at the cost of Dhawan and not Vijay, given that the latter still happens to be a more experienced hand given the conditions in South African. Yet, it’ll have to be seen what skipper Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri have in mind after they visit Centurion on Thursday”.
It is reported that Rohit Sharma might get another opportunity in place of Ajinkya Rahane in the second Test. “Meanwhile, the debate over picking Rohit Sharma ahead of Ajinkya Rahane is likely to continue because the team will continue with the former over the latter simply because of the form and runs he carried with him from the home series against Sri Lanka,” the report further added.
It would be interesting to note the final XI of the Indian team as the playing XI in the first Test had taken everyone by surprise and thus had raised many eyebrows. Debutant Jasprit Bumrah who did a good job in the second innings is expected to make the cut once again.
