‘Cricket is always a captain’s game’ was once quoted by the former legendary skipper of India, Sourav Ganguly. To be frank, he is quite right on each side as Captain always plays an elemental role in nourishing the team to cross the winning ropes. The same we saw when Ganguly uplifted Indian team from very low bar to high standard in the overseas.
MS Dhoni, the successor of Sourav Ganguly has done equally well with Sourav Ganguly on the field. Carrying the same legacy of captaincy, the stylish bearded Virat Kohli is peaking nicely to keep India ruthless in each format of the game. With Virat Kohli being rested for the upcoming ODI series, let’s dig out four potential choices to take the role.
Here are they:
4. Suresh Raina:
I guess you guys surprised with the name on the list. Aren’t you? But, he is one of the sure shot players who has a potential to replace Virat Kohli in the forthcoming series. He has been fantastic over the decade and half years for the country but the recent form seen his ouster from the team. However, he might make his comeback into the team and has the capability to lead India.
He led Indian team when they toured to Bangladesh and clinched the series in an emphatic fashion. The famous spell of Stuart Binny (4/6) came under his captaincy as well. Though it is an individual performance, the field settings placed by Raina made the impact much more.
3. Shikhar Dhawan:
Shikhar Dhawan could certainly be on the list after his fantastic batting piece of display recently. He has been exceptional for India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 and equally impressive in the ODI series against Windies as well. He recently knocked down the career-best tally of 190 runs in the first Test and selectors might prefer him in the captaincy list.
Coming to the experience in captaincy, Shikhar Dhawan has a fair bit of it when he led Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier league. However, he hasn’t tasted much success as the skipper but giving him a chance is possible by keeping future possibilities.
