The Indian Premier League Governing Council has finalised that franchises can retain a maximum of their five players. It could be a clear sign that MS Dhoni will play for Chennai Super Kings again. The teams will be able to retain only five current players in the auction which will take place in February.

It is obvious the all over line up of all the eight teams will be the same.Talking about the players that the Royals and CSK could retain, the returning franchises will get a player pool of players who played for them respectively in IPL 2015.

Dhoni’s return to CSK has become more evident now.

It can be expected that Chennai Super Kings will go to any length to claim Mahendra Singh Dhoni again and this new retention will give a good opportunity to every franchise to retain their crucial players.

There is a lot of gossips already which players would these sides would like to retain since they had not been a part of the IPL roster last year. Some franchises in the past were in the favour of an all open pool, but there were also few who wanted to retain their players. There is another elite group wanted to have the Right To Match Cards available at the auction. But now all these above-mentioned points are cleared now.

The franchises can retain a maximum of 5 players using the combination of retention or the Right to Match. The franchises may or may not retain any players at all. If they do not retain any player, they will have 3 RTMs at the auction. In any case, maximum of only 3 retentions or RTMs would be allowed.

The break-up of five players is as follows:

A maximum number of 3 Capped Indian players.
A maximum number of 2 Overseas players.
A maximum number of 2 Uncapped Indian players.

Here are some twitter reactions to this retention policy:
